150 Walking Challenge

Calling all Dayton VA Medical Center staff and volunteers, Veterans and community members! 2017 is a historical year for the Dayton VA Medical Center as it celebrates servicing Veterans for 150 years. The 150 Walking Challenge was established to encourage health and wellness in those who directly impact the Dayton VA Medical Center. In celebration of 150 years the 150 Walking Challenge was developed. The challenge consists of, an individual walking (or rolling) 150 miles over the course of 2017 at Dayton VA Medical Center sponsored and/or approved walks. Teams of up to 10 members are also encouraged, to accomplish the most miles possible! Walk over 150 miles and you will be in the running to win the grand prize for the most mileage completed!!!!  1st, 2nd and 3rd place individual and Team finishers (for most miles walked; TEAM competition based on average miles walked by each Team member) and those who complete the 150 Walking Challenge will receive prizes, too. This challenge will begin January 1, 2017 and conclude on Veterans Day, November 11, 2017 at the Veterans Day Ceremony at Dayton VA Medical Center. Let's get walking!

    • Tuesdays and Wednesday (every week)
    • Location: Currently, due to cold weather: Walk participants will meet in the basement of Building 330 and walk in the basement.

    • Location: Currently, due to cold weather: Walk participants will meet in the basement of Building 330 and walk in the basement.

  • Location: 1323 W. Third Street, Dayton, OH 45402
  • Time: 10:00 AM
  • 40 minutes, 2.5 miles

***If you wish to carpool with other Dayton VA staff, meet in front of Primary Care Building #340 at 9:30 AM and depart at 9:45 AM. Meet in the lot across the street from the Charles R. Drew Health Center. The Dayton VA group will assemble at 10:00 AM to take a VA group picture. The carpool group will then return to DVAMC following the event. Interested in walking or rolling after you complete your work day?  Or do you want to walk or roll prior to starting your work day but the 12:10 PM regularly scheduled “Walk n' Roll” is not a good time for you?  If you are interested in being a leader for a "Walk n' Roll" after work, during an alternative TOD to the day shift or are at a CBOC, please contact betsey.striebel@va.gov. Or maybe you walk on a regular basis at DVAMC and would be interested in making it a group walk, where others can join please contact betsey.striebel@va.gov.


Things to know about the 150th Walking Challenge!

GOAL: Each participant to individually walk (or roll) 150 miles over the course of 2017 at Dayton VA sponsored and/or approved walks.

  1. 150th Walking Challenge: 150 miles can be accumulated beginning on January 1, 2017 and ending on November 11, 2017 ~ Veterans Day 2017 ceremony.

  2. Participation is voluntary. Please consult with your health care provider before starting any new physical exercise activities. Please walk at your own risk, as the VA is not responsible for any accidents or injuries of registered participants.

  3. In order to be a registered participant in the 150th Walking Challenge, please complete and sign the required “Individual Registration Form” and return it to the event organizers. Please be sure to provide name, contact number and email. Group email lists will be used to provide direct communication about the 150th Walking Challenge.

  4. Only walks that are sponsored or approved by 150 Walking Challenge walks will count towards the cumulative total of miles walked. If you are interested in having a walk approved by the 150th Walking Challenge please contact: Betsey.striebel@va.gov no less than 30 days prior to walk (walks less than 30 days out will not be considered).

  5. Once completing the registration form, participants will be given a 150th Walking Challenge Mileage Card. Participants will be given one card, and each card will identify the participant number (i.e. #001). Mileage Card will be used to document walked miles by each participant. If card is lost, previous mileage cannot be accounted for.

  6. Participants will receive Mileage Stamps on their individual cards at VA sponsored walks or participants will need to see 150th Walking Challenge event organizer to receive stamp following an approved walk. Stamps will not be given to anyone other than the participant who walked the mileage with their individual card. Responsible adult may receive Mileage Stamps for children under age 18 years old, but each minor’s card must be present at time of.

  7. Participants when walking in a VA approved walk must present a “selfie” taken at the completion of the miles walked (if possible, please include a walk banner or landscape unique to location in “selfie”) to an event organizer within 14 days of completed walk to receive 150th Walking Challenge Mileage Stamp.

  8. Also, it is encouraged to post “selfie” on social media sites with hashtags: #daytonva150 and #150walkingchallenge .

  9. Participants include: Dayton VA Medical Center Staff, Veterans, Dayton VA Medical Center Volunteers, and community members. Children under the age of 18 are welcome, when accompanied by an adult. Children under the age of 18 can only participate in sponsored and approved walks when accompanied by a responsible adult.

  10. Participants can register for the 150th Walking Challenge anytime between January 1, 2017 and July 1, 2017. Non-participants of 150th Walking Challenge are welcome to come out and walk at any time.

  11. Participants are encouraged to create TEAMS of up to 10 members. TEAMS need to complete the 150th Walking Challenge Team Registration Form and must be registered no later than July 1, 2017, and have no more than 10 participants. Once a TEAM is created, additional members cannot be added. Each TEAM needs to have their own unique TEAM name (Dayton VA historical references are encouraged!).

  12. TEAM winners will be determined by the average number of miles walked per TEAM member. EXAMPLE: TEAM A of 10 members walk a total of 500 miles. 500 miles divided by 10 TEAM members = 50 miles per person. OR a TEAM B of 5 members walk total of 500 miles divided by 5 TEAM members = 100 miles per person. TEAM B would be the winner based on number of miles walked per TEAM Member.

  13. Final walk sponsored by 150th Walking Challenge will be a walk on the Dayton VA Medical Center on Veterans Day 2017 (November 11, 2017). Walk details TBD and will be announced once finalized. Walk will be followed by a Veterans Day Ceremony, and winners will be announced at ceremony for the following:

Grand Prizes:              Individual most miles walked

                                      TEAM most miles walked (average per person).

                                      Child most miles walked

1st, 2nd and 3rd place: Individual

All participants who achieve 150 miles will be recognized and given a commemorative prize.
